RACS program rests upon a rigorous curriculum that particularly focuses on mathematics and science. State guidelines and other successful college preparation programs including the Syracuse Academy of Science have been utilized to establish specific, rigorous, manageable and measurable academic standards. This will eventually clearly define what each student should know and be able to do upon completion of each grade level and/or grade cluster (intermediate level for grades 7-8 and commencement level for grades 9-12). All courses align with the New York State Learning Standards, every unit addresses state standards and every state standard receives sufficient attention during the year.
Our School Model
- RACS will meet a need for a college preparatory school for low achieving students with special emphasis on math and science education in Rochester.
- RACS will promote a safe, caring and student-centered classroom environment in which project-based learning will be supported by meaningful, authentic and hands-on activities. Additionally, we believe that high academic expectations from our students are vital to increase student motivation.
- RACS will provide individual attention to each student by differentiated lesson instruction and alternative assessments providing one-on-one tutoring, intensive counseling through a supervisory system and individualized goals. RACS believes these elements in motivating students. RACS will work in cooperation with local universities to develop practical means for building an effective tutoring system.
- RACS will hire highly-qualified teachers and administrators. All RACS staff members will be dedicated to education and committed to the success of both the students and the school. A condition of employment will be that they are committed to continually improving their skills through professional development opportunities and are willing to differentiate lessons to help meet the individual and unique needs of students.
- RACS will promote parental involvement. According to various charter school reports, among the top reasons parents choose charter schools for their children are small class sizes and greater opportunities for parental involvement. Our education program will facilitate parental involvement and as a result, it will attract sustained interest from dedicated parents.
- RACS will integrate multi-cultural themes into our curricula through not only geography and foreign languages, but also through each subject area. Some key activities will include student contacts with other cultures through participation in academic competitions, science fairs, and community service.
- RACS will extensively use Educational Outreach Programs available at local higher-degree institutions. We have contacted several directors of various science outreach activities at the University of Rochester. This will further support our ambition and goal of incorporating project-based learning into our curriculum.
